This building is a gathering space for the residents, a place to sit together and talk around a fireside with the warm light of the lantern roof illuminated for everyone who lives nearby.
This “Home-for-All” is in the temporary housing town of Heita ground in Kamaishi city. This area is called six district in Heita. In conventional planning, all houses have an entrance hall in the north side and get light from south side. But in Heita six district, the entrance hall faced each other. Immediately after 3/11 disaster this site was suggested to the planning chief of the housing section of Iwate prefecture. “Home for All” was then built in this temporary housing town.
In the night this building is a bar, visible from the nearby highway and in the temporary housing town. The warm glow of the light stands out especially in the night. The building offers a place for residents to meet easily, a place to talk when they can’t sleep. Using light permeable tent material for the roof was a way to harness light - in the daytime light filters in and during the night, the tent is lit from within.
The structure is similar to an umbrella. There is a fireplace under the hood which is attached to a 125mm column. There is a opening on the column and it works as chimney. In the Heita HOME-FOR-ALL residents grill venison and dried squid and impromptu drinks parties happen with volunteer students, craftsmen and residents talking freely with each other around the fireplace.
When it came to naming the surrounding streets, the architect spoke with residents. Together they decided that each street should be named after a flower.
「平田みんなの家」は釜石市の平田（へいた）グランドに並ぶ仮設住宅群の中にあります。平田第六地区という場所です。ここに建てられた仮設住宅は従来の北側アクセス南側採光の住棟配置ではなくて、住戸へのアクセスがお互いに向かい合うように配置されています。つまり通りを挟んで玄関が向かい合って配置されているわけです。3・11直後に岩手県の住宅課長にこの配置計画を提案して実現しました。240戸の住宅群です。
「みんなの家」はこの仮設住宅群の中につくりました。夜は飲み屋になるような「みんなの家」です。近くの国道からも、住宅群の中からもどこからでもよく見える建築です。夜は特に目立ちます。眠れない時にもここに来れば誰かに会える、話ができる、そう思ってもらえるような建築になったらと思いました。夜、中の光が透けて見えるようなテントを素材として選んだのはそのためです。
昼間は外の光が透過して中は明るい。傘のような構造システムです。芯柱の125角の角パイプにフードをつけて真下に囲炉裏をつくりました。芯柱に穴を空けてそれを煙道にします。早速住人差し入れの鹿肉やスルメを焼きました。ボランティアの学生、仮設住宅の住人たち、工事を請け負ってくれた工事会社の職人たち、完成直前の即興飲み会です。囲炉裏を囲むだけで誰とでも話ができそうな気がします。
囲炉裏を囲みながら住民の人たちと話をしました。向かい合ったそれぞれの通りに通り名をつけたらどうだろう。花の名前がいいという多くの人たちからの意見で、12の通りに､それぞれ12種類の花の名前がつけられました。
