The shopping street in the heart of Kamaishi City suffered extensive damage as a result of the tsunami in 2011. Many shops and restaurants have lost their business in the disaster. Reconstruction and regeneration of the commercial enterprises of local residents was one of the most important challenges for the town. HOME-FOR-ALL worked with Rias NPO Support Center to begin this project. The residents decided the new shopping street should be in the eastern district of the city.
The main structure of the building is made from iron and wood - low cost, easy to construct materials. The exterior walls are made out of inexpensive concrete blocks which makes it simple to dismantle and relocate the structure if need arises in the future. The room inside has no pillars so that it can be used in various ways. The structure of the roof is a wooden arched beam and the open frame creates lightness and warmth.
Many of the material from the ceiling down to the kitchen comes from the sponsorship of companies. Volunteers, craftsman from the temporary housing complexes and students at the Ito Juku architecture school worked together to create new furniture and to paint the walls. Again, the philosophy of “Home-for-All” was clear here - the people making the structure and the people using it are working together.
This house is called “Home-for-All Kadatte”. In Kamaishi local dialect 'Kadatte' translates are "everyone come together!” . After completion, as the name implies, this structure will be used again and again to enhance the life of local people. This building will be the "Reconstruction Cafe" where children and adults can think about reconstruction in their community. It will also be used to sell local handmade goods - “Kadatte Marche”, for school recitals and for computer classes.
釜石市の中心部にある商店街は、津波によって甚大な被害を受けました。被災した商店街での営業をあきらめて立ち去る商店の経営者も少なくない中、震災の前から釜石のまちづくりのための活動をしていた＠リアスNPOサポートセンターと一緒に、復興の拠点をつくることになりました。市街地の中心だった東部地区の商店街を再生することは、釜石の住民の願いであり、復興まちづくりの大切な課題のひとつでした。
つくりやすく、ローコストで、将来は解体・移設の可能性もあるという点から主体構造は鉄構造と木造が組み合わされ、外壁はコンクリートブロックでつくられています。内部はさまざまな使い方ができるように柱のないワンルームで、木造の小屋組は張弦梁構造。木と鉄の特性を利用した、軽やかさと温かみを併せ持った架構です。
天井からキッチンにいたるまで多くの材料は企業の協賛によるもの。近くの仮設住宅や伊東建築塾からのボランティアと職人とが協力して、家具の制作や壁の塗装にあたりました。ここでもまた、つくる人と使う人が一体となった「みんなの家」の理念が実現しています。
この家は「みんなの家かだって」という愛称で親しまれています。「かだって」とは「みんなおいで！」という意味で使われる釜石地方の方言だそう。完成後はその名前のとおり、子どもも大人も復興について考える「復興カフェ」や、地域の人が持ち寄った手作りの品を販売する「かだってマルシェ」、朗読会やパソコン講習会など、次々と充実したイベントが開催されています。
